Turchas is a historic village high in the Sangre de Christo Mountains of Northern New Mexico where Native Pueblo people have subsistence farmed and hunted for at least a thousand years. In 1754 the Spanish created The Truchas Land Grant for the village bringing Mexican and Spanish settlers to the area creating it's unique cultural mix. Truchas is the Spanish word for Trout, which were abundant in the numerous high mountain streams ias well as today. This painting was painted at a friend's property looking east at Truchas Peak which was covered with the remains of a late Spring snowfall. The grass was greening up, the irrigation ditches or Acequias were full of crystal clear water, the Leopard Frogs and Red Wing Blackbirds were were creating quite a racket, and the air was comfortingly warm.
